Part of our preparation in Kathmandu involved a prayer ceremony with a Buddhist Lama. Our hotel was next to the largest Buddhist Temple in Nepal, the Bouddanath. The puja was a sober affair until the Lama could not fit the amulet he prepared for me over my head. I think westerners have larger heads. In any case, he just drapped it over my ears and laughed. His prayers for us created a connection between our prayer flags, katas (prayer scarf), amulets, and the puja to be held at Baruntse basecamp.
Our team enjoyed a dinner together in a Sherpa restaurant overlooking the Bouddanath. While we are feasting, pilgrims are circum-ambulating the temple, prostrating themselves and offering prayers as they go. After dinner we joined the procession. These are devout people!
